International ceramics journal relaunches

Leeds, UK, 3 November 2004

Advances in Applied Ceramics: Structural, Functional and Bioceramics will launch in 2005, providing the ceramics community with cutting edge coverage of research into the processing, fabrication, characterisation and applications of advanced ceramics. The journal, published by Maney on behalf of the (UK) Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, formerly appeared as British Ceramic Transactions. The new title reflects its increased focus on the rapidly developing area of engineering ceramics.

“During the past months I have been working closely with the publishers to develop and reposition the journal. I have striven to broaden the Editorial Board, which is now truly international,” says the journal's editor, Professor Mohan Edirisinghe. “The title change - a broader and more international title that captures developments in all types of ceramics: structural, functional and biomedical - is a logical step in this process.”

The journal provides international coverage of high quality peer-reviewed research on functional ceramics, structural ceramics (including ceramic matrix composites and glass ceramics), and bioceramics. It will have a particular interest in areas such as nanotechnology and biomaterials where materials scientists are progressing through interdisciplinary collaboration, and also on advanced processing routes to control microstructure, although good work on “traditional” ceramics will remain an important component of the mix.

Advances in Applied Ceramics launches with a special issue on cellular ceramics, guest edited by Professor Paolo Colombo of the University of Bologna. Contributions report innovative processing routes to tailor porous structures for biomedical, filter, catalyst and structural applications. Future planned special issues will highlight other exciting research themes, including biomaterials.

The Editor, backed by an international Editorial Board, is committed to rigorous refereeing and to rapid publication of research. High quality papers reporting cutting edge research are invited; submissions should be sent electronically as Word or PDF files to: The Editor, Advances in Applied Ceramics, c/o Ms Victoria Wells, Department of Materials, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS, UK, email v.g.wells@qmul.ac.uk.
