Leeds, UK
Maney Publishing and the British Orthodontic Society announce the first Journal of Orthodontics Scientific Paper of the Year prize winner
We are delighted to announce the winner of the Journal of Orthodontics Scientific Paper of the Year, sponsored by Maney Publishing is 'Decontamination of orthodontic bands following size determination and cleaning' by P. E. Benson and C. W. I. Douglas (published in the Journal of Orthodontics Vol. 34, No. 1, March 2007). The paper will be freely available to view online at http://jorthod.maneyjournals.org.
The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) introduced the Journal of Orthodontics Scientific Paper of the Year, to recognise and encourage scientific and evidence-based developments in orthodontics and orthodontic practice. The award is sponsored by Maney Publishing, publishers of the Journal of Orthodontics.
An international panel from the Journal's editorial board chose the winning paper from scientific papers published in the Journal between 1st May 2006 and 30th April 2007. The successful paper has been selected according to its importance to orthodontics, scientific quality, readability and most importantly, the potential to change orthodontic practice whether in the clinic or laboratory.
The winners will receive a prize fund of £750 awarded by Maney Publishing along with a certificate of their achievement presented at the British Orthodontic Conference which will be held in Harrogate from 23-26th September.
A paper published by the Journal of Orthodontics has also won the prestigious European Federation of Orthodontics (FEO) Award. The win for 'A randomized clinical trial comparing 'one-step' and 'two-step' orthodontic bonding systems' by N. Manning, S. M. Chadwick, D. Plunkett, and T. V. Macfarlane (published in the Journal of Orthodontics Vol. 33, No. 4, Dec 2006) means this is the second year running that a paper from the Journal has been awarded the prize. In May 2006 it was announced that the winner of the FEO Award for the best paper published within the last two years in the national journal of a FEO Member Society was 'A randomized controlled trial comparing the quadhelix and the expansion arch for the correction of crossbite', by M. R.McNally and D. J. Spary, (Journal of OrthodonticsVol. 32, No. 1, March 2005).
The consistent international award winning success of papers published by the Journal of Orthodontics demonstrates the Journal's dedication to advancing the field of orthodontics by fostering and rewarding new research.
The Journal's Editor-in-Chief, Dr Friedy Luther of the Department of Orthodontics, Leeds Dental Institute, University of Leeds, said: “This is great news and shows the quality of the papers published in the Journal of Orthodontics.
