Contributions may be written in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, or English and should not exceed 8,000 words. Contributions are welcomed on the understanding that they are original material not published or under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Contributions should be submitted on disk (preferably in Word or WordPerfect) and accompanied by hard copy. The hard copy should be in duplicate, typed on one side of A4 or US letter size paper, doubled-spaced and with ample margins. The filename and software must be indicated on the disk. In preparing the disk version, there is no need to format articles submitted on disk: please include italics or bold type where necessary, but not style or footnote codes. Footnotes should be typed at the end of the file as part of the text, do not use automatic note numbering routines. In the main text, numbering of notes should be indicated by superscript numbers. References and captions should be placed at the end of the file. Please use hard returns only at the end of paragraphs, switch auto-hyphenation off and do not justify text. Consistency in spacing, punctuation, and spelling is essential.

All contributions should be accompanied by two abstracts, each no more than 200 words, one in English, the other in the language of the contribution. For contributions in English, the second abstract should be in Spanish unless the content makes Portuguese or Catalan more appropriate.

All quotations and references should have been verified. Single quotation marks should be used throughout, but indented quotations do not require quotation marks. Double quotation marks should be used only within single ones. Translations are not required for quotations in Catalan, Portuguese or Spanish.

The Author-Date system should be used for references in order to minimize the number of footnotes. Contributions should be followed by an alphabetical list of Works Cited conforming to the following examples: (a) a book, (b) an article in a book, (c) an article in a periodical, (d) a chapter of a book that has been published elsewhere, and (e), by the author of the previous work in the list, ina book that is cited elsewhere in the contribution:

(a)

Doménech, Ricardo, ed., 1987. ‘El castigo sin venganza’ y el teatro de Lope de Vega (Madrid: Cátedra & Teatro Español).

(b)

Greene, Gayle & Coppélia Kahn, 1985. ‘Feminist Scholarship and the Social Construction of Women’, in Making a Difference: Feminist Literary Criticism, ed. Green & Kahn (London: Metheun), pp. 59–79.

(c)

McKendrick, Malveena, 1969. ‘The bandolera of Golden Age Drama: A Symbol of Feminist Revolt’, BHS, 46: 120.

(d)

Varey, J. E., 1987a. 'El campo en el teatro español del siglo XVII', in his Comovisíon y escenografia: el teatro español en el Siglo de Oro, Nueva Biblioteca de Erudición y Crítica, 2 (Madrid: Castalia), pp. 37–69 (First publ. as ‘La Campagne dans le théatre espagnol au XVIIe siècle’, in Dramaturgie et société, ed. Jean Jacquot, 2 vols (Paris: CNRS, 1968), I, 47–76).

—,

1987b. ‘El castigo sin venganza en las tablas de los corrales de comedias’, in Doménech 1987: 223–39.

Names of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies (accessible on the internet: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~srp/ywmls.htm). Those which do not appear in this list should be given in full.

In all other respects, the style of contributions should conform to the rules of the MHRA Style Guide (5th edn, 1996) which is available from Maney Publishing, Suite 1C, Joseph's Well, Hanover Walk, Leeds LS3 1AB, UK. A special leaflet entitled ‘Notes for Authors’ / ‘Normas para autores’ is also available from the editors of HRJ on request.

Tables and illustrations should be submitted on separate sheets and numbered sequentially using Arabic numerals for Figures (illustrations, i.e. photographs, diagrams and graphs), and Roman numerals for Tables. Each must have a caption, source and where appropriate, key. The position in the text must be clearly shown (e.g. Figure 1, Table IV). Black and white prints of photographs should be supplied. Captions should be submitted on a separate sheet. Tables should be submitted as separate files and keyed horizontally from left to right using a tab between columns, not the space bar (or keyed in Table mode in Word).

Proofs will be emailed to the author nominated for correspondence. Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential typographical corrections, not for general revision, alteration, or changes to illustrations, which will not be allowed. Proofs must be returned to the Editor-in-Chief within 5 working days.

E-prints Authors of papers in Hispanic Research Journal receive a screen-resolution PDF file of the published version. Orders for digital offprints may be made at the time proofs are distributed.
