Meet the Editor...
John Knott, Editor of Materials Science and Technology. 'Welcome to all readers! My name is John Knott, and I have been Editor of MST since the beginning of 2003. The aim of this article is to tell you something about myself and of the connections that I have had with the Institute’s journals and other publications over what is now a period of more than fifty years, during which time what were more nationally focused, ‘institutional’ publications have evolved into the international journals you see today. Continue reading John's personal introduction to his interests and philosophy for MST here. He reviews some of his previous work on fracture processes in his editorial to the January 2010 issue, here. Focus on the Associate Editors... Click here to read more about the team behind MST.
Materials Literature Review Prize... MST contributes to the development of the materials discipline by running an annual Literature Review Prize, to encourage the writing of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. The winning review and selected highly commended reviews are published in the journal. The Prize is open to any postgraduate studying for a materials science and engineering related qualification at a UK institution. It is run by the Editorial Board of MST on behalf of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and judged by a panel appointed by the Board, chaired by the Editor, John Knott. For more information on the prize and submission process click here or email Naomi Asantewa-Sechereh. View articles from previous Literature Prize winners here! Sign up for ToC alerts... The evolution of a journal: MST began publication in 1985 as the merger of two established journals. Metal Science was founded in 1967 by an Editorial Committee led by Ray Smallman to publish the increasing flow of work ‘dealing with the basic science of metals… studies that increase our understanding of the relation between the structure of metals and observed properties’. Metals Technology was founded in 1974 under an Editorial Panel chaired by Robin Nicholson to publish ‘papers in the field of applied metallurgy and materials technology’. In turn, MT provided a link to the emergence of metallurgy as a distinct discipline, being a direct descendent of the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute (1869) and the Journal of the Institute of Metals (1909), which published seminal papers from the likes of Bessemer, Siemens, Hadfield, Sorby and Hume-Rothery. 25 year perspectives... In recognition of this 25 year 'anniversary', MST has for 2010 commissioned a series of 25 year reviews. The perspectives will cover topics where notable developments have occurred since MST was founded, including areas such as advanced imaging and characterisation that effectively did not exist 25 years ago, as well as topics such as semisolid processing that have moved from laboratory status to commercial exploitation. Perspectives are intended to allow authors to take a personal approach to the development of their topic. The emphasis is very much on the current state of the art, the prospects and developments necessary for further progress. View contributions accepted to date here!
Materials Science and Technology is a MORE OpenChoice journal publishing open access papers. This initiative has been developed in response to the changing requirements of our customers (authors, researchers, academic libraries), and those funding bodies which support research and scholarly communication. MORE OpenChoice papers will provide additional momentum in optimizing dissemination of, and access to, research in specific disciplines and in particular parts of the world. At the cutting edge of 3D imaging...
In 2010 Materials Science and Engineering published a special issue on 3D imaging by micro-tomography reflecting the move from 2D to 3D techniques.

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) is a major UK engineering institution whose activities encompass the whole materials cycle and which exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering. IOM3 was formed from the merger of the Institute of Materials and the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in June 2002 but its roots go back to the Iron and Steel Institute which was established in 1869. More recently it has merged with the Institute of Packaging (2006), the Institute of Clay Technology (2006) and the Institute of Wood Science (2009). Visit the IOM3 website here! The archive: As of 2010, institutional subscribers will have online access to the full back archive of MST included in their subscription. This archive provides complete coverage of MST back to Volume 1 (1985) and its well respected predecessor, Metal Science Journal (1967-84). Read the free editorial by John Knott and get his personal perspective on some of the key articles to be discovered in these rich archives! Editorials available to read free... MST regularly publishes theme issues or collections of papers on topics of current interest. Highlights from the content being offered free include: The superalloys, from processing to performance. High resolution chemical mapping. High temperature fatigue - influences of environment and creep Composition-microstructure-processing relationships in electroceramics Applications of electron backscattered diffraction High temperature behaviour Online submission...
