The Editorial Board Dr Andrew Pinkerton Andrew Pinkerton has researched laser processing and modelling for 10 years at The University of Manchester. Originally specialising in analytical modelling, he is currently leading EC FP7 and international industry funded projects into laser cladding. He is author and co-author of over 100 papers in these fields. Read more on this topic and download the free Technology Vision by Dr Andrew Pinkerton here. Dr Joseph Buhagiar Dr Buhagiar talks about his work and highlights some papers from Surface Engineering. Download Joseph's guest editorial '25 years of S-phase' here! -------------------------------------------- Suman Shrestha received his PhD on ‘Corrosion and wear of thermal sprayed coatings’ from the University of Glasgow, UK and an MSc with Honours in Mechanical Design Engineering from St. Petersburg State University of Technology & Design, Russia. He is currently Global Applications Engineering Manager at Keronite International Ltd and is responsible for directing, managing and conducting Keronite applications engineering focusing on strategic application developments / solutions for automotive, aerospace & space and oil & gas sectors with the use of light metal alloys. Read more from Professor Suman and download his Technology Vision here! --------------------------------------------- Professor Peter Kelly The ever increasing drive for improved product performance at reduced cost has led to surface engineering becoming an integral part of product design in most industries. In many cases, it will be surface coatings and thin films that provide the desired surface properties. In fact, the entire device or component may essentially consist of a stack of thin films, each of which delivers specific functionality. Read more from Peter and download Peter's editorial from Materials Technology free here.

IOM3: Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining
The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) is a major UK engineering institution whose activities encompass the whole materials cycle and which exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering. IOM3 was formed from the merger of the Institute of Materials and the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in June 2002 but its roots go back to the Iron and Steel Institute which was established in 1869. More recently it has merged with the Institute of Packaging (2006), the Institute of Clay Technology (2006) and the Institute of Wood Science (2009). Surface Engineering Division
The Surface Engineering Division is a ‘technical community’ with the IOM3. The new Surface Engineering Division Strategy encompasses the needs of British Industry to enable predictive design of important components and products to be achieved with the minimum of waste and utilising more sustainable materials using environmentally friendly processes.
