Clothmaking in the Middle Ages has attracted much scholarly attention and generated sharp differences of opinion. But hitherto discussion of the problems raised has been confined to articles in learned journals, introductory surveys in books mainly devoted to the later history of the subject and brief chapters in general histories of medieval economic affairs.
This is the first book ever published to be devoted exclusively to medieval English clothmaking. It offers an entirely new interpretation of the course of development in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, that critical period during which England turned from wool exporting to the exporting of cloth. The author has written many books and articles on problems of medieval economic history. Medieval English Clothmaking will appeal not only to students and specialists but also to those who are interested in finding out how this important phase of English industrialisation began.
