There has long been a need for a selected and annotated list of books on historic costume, since the number of books in this sphere has mounted to formidable proportions. What is more, simple bibliographies - however well classified - are not sufficient; annotations are a necessity for the student or layman, who is not in a position to judge the usefulness of a work by its title and date. The advent of the Costume Society made it all the more desirable that such vital aids to study were provided.
This introductory bibliography was compiled for students beginning to study the history of costume. It contains approximately five hundred articles, books and journals, mainly published after 1900, dealing primarily with the history of Western European costume.
This is the second edition, prepared and brought up to date by Janet Arnold in 1974.
