Revealing the hidden graves of the Holocaust

Groundbreaking research to be published in Journal of Conflict Archaeology

In the first survey of the WWII Treblinka death camp in Poland that used tools to see below the ground's surface, forensic archaeologist Caroline Sturdy Colls found a number of pits that confirm the existence of mass graves at the site...

"Some may be the result of post-war looting, prompted by myths of buried Jewish gold, but several larger pits were recorded in areas suggested by witnesses as the locations of mass graves and cremation sites..."

The findings of the survey are to be published in Volume 7 (2012) Issue 2 of the Journal of Conflict Archaeology. Read an article on this significant discovery in the BBC News Magazine.

NEW Society for Medieval Archaeology Monographs

Ironwork in Medieval Britain and The Chapel and Burial Ground on St Ninian's Isle, Shetland are new to the Society for Medieval Archaeology Monograph Series
for 2012.

The Society has published a series of monographs for more than thirty-five years. It covers a full range of topics and site types including cemeteries and burials, rural settlement, towns, industry, religious and monastic sites, manors and moats together with more synthetic conference volumes on specific themes.

REVIEW: The Historic Environment in Context

The Historic Environment: Policy & Practice has been reviewed in Context, the magazine of the Institute for Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) and is described as "essential reading for heritage professionals". The review welcomes the journal's "interdisciplinary overlap" and gives special attention to a number articles from the first three issues of the journal including 'Characterization in an Urban Setting: The Experience of the Black Country' by Paul Quigley and Michael Shaw, which the review notes as an "interesting and detailed overview of urban characterisation".

is the annual journal of the Vernacular Architecture Group, which was founded in 1952 to further the study of traditional buildings.
