Meet the Editor

Brian Coulter

Brian Coulter was born in Ireland and graduated in Medicine from Trinity College, University of Dublin in 1964. His medical training was undertaken in the UK. His first post in paediatrics was at the United Christian Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan (1966), which kindled an interest in child health in developing countries. His main training in paediatrics was at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool. He worked for 2 years in neonatal medicine in Glasgow, following which he went to Nigeria to take up a 2-year consultant post in the Department of Paediatrics, Ahmadu Bello University Hospital, Kaduna. While completing his training in Aberdeen, Scotland, a chance renewal of acquaintance with Ralph Hendrickse, Head of the Department of Tropical Paediatrics, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) attracted him back to Liverpool where he was appointed Senior Lecturer in 1978. In 1981, he was seconded for 2 years as Associate Professor to the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Khartoum, The Sudan. When he returned from The Sudan he was appointed honorary consultant paediatrician to Alder Hey Children's Hospital. He finally retired from LSTM in 2005.

How Brian became the Editor-in-Chief of Paediatrics and International Child Health...

When Ralph Hendrickse launched Annals of Tropical Paediatrics (ATP) in 1981, Brian, as an editor, took an interest in the journal and regularly reviewed submissions. His wife, Vanessa, became assistant editor in 1988, a post that she still holds. In 2004, Ralph retired and Brian took over as editor-in-chief of ATP which, from 2012, will become Paediatrics and International Child Health. Brian believes that the change in title will broaden the scope of the journal and attract a wider range of papers from paediatricians in hospital practice throughout the world.
